Peyronie's Disease: A Fact Sheet
Introduction
This article is meant to be an in-depth look at Peyronie's Disease and the ways in which the men of the world can help themselves.
This fact sheet is not a medical diagnosis, but rather a complete look at the way this disease effects the victims and what should be done with the disease should a person contract it.
We hope that this article will raise awareness for men who are stricken with this disease and influence their decision to seek medical attention.
What is Peyronie's Disease?
Peyronie's Disease is the formation of a plague like substance in a ring around the penis shaft. This formation will continue to grow with time and it cause the penis to bend or curve.
The other name for this condition is curvature of the penis. As the ring gets larger the bend or curve gets worse.
If the condition gets worse it may make sexual intercourse impossible because of the fact that the penis is no longer straight and can not be used for penetration.
The curvature of the penis is most evident when the penis is erect and this is the point when the disease is most distressing to the people that are afflicted with it.
Why is it called Peyronie's Disease?
This disease is so named because of the doctor who first diagnosed a case in the middle 1700's. The doctors name was Francois Gigot La Peyronie. He was known for his studies of the genital area and to the first treatments, though unsuccessful, for the disease bearing his name.
What the effects of Peyronie's Disease?
Intense pain is the most notable of all the effects that this disease can have on a victim. The pain is because of the fact that the penis is bent or curved into a very unnatural position and when the penis becomes erect the pain sets in.
Most of the pain is associated with the erection and therefore a penis that is at rest is generally not effected by the disease. The pain will continue unless the condition is treated. Most of the victims find that sexual intercourse is too painful and therefore becomes impossible.
One of the possibilities of this disease is for the patient to develop impotence or erectile dysfunction. When these conditions set in it may be impossible for the person to ever achieve sexual relations again without medical attention.
What if I think I have this disease?
Part of this issue is seeking medical attention right away. It is very possible to treat this disease with a variety of options. However, most doctors agree that treatment is much more successful when the condition is caught at an early stage.
The early formation of the ring is the first warning sign and therefore you should seek the attention of a doctor right away. They will make some suggestions as to treatment from the beginning which may include a traction device or even vitamin shots.
There are cases where the condition improves without the treatment but it may return.
